Hi -
I have a question about compatibility between the newer Macs with the M1 chip and Epson printers.
I am currently using an Epson printer (XP-970) with my older (Intel) MacBook Pro, and am considering upgrading to the new 16-inch M1 MBP when it is released in the next month or so. When I checked the compatibility of the Epson print drivers and utilities in the "Get Info" screen, they all indicate they are "Intel" apps, rather than "Universal", and therefore not designed to run on Macs with the M1 chip.
I know that I can print without the Epson drivers, using AirPrint, but I seem to need the drivers for other printer tasks like scanning and printing to CD/DVD discs.
Does anyone know whether the Rosetta software that comes with the M1-equipped Macs is sufficient to seamlessly run all my printing functions from the Epson? Do I have any other options other than buying a different printer or buying a new MBP with the old Intel chip?
I appreciate any information anyone can provide.

- what printer will work with the MacBook Air M2?I upgraded from a early 2015 MacBook Air that I send print jobs to an Epson NX430 using a USB connection. The other day I bought the new M2 MacBook Air. It won't print on the NX430 - but I can scan using the NX430. Am I out of hope and must buy a new printer? - Big Sur and printersDoes anybody know what printers are compatible with Big Sur? I need one that has the capability of scanning as my new MacBook Pro will only work with my epson printers on wireless printing, It's driving me nuts! 841
- Printer accessMy Epson XP-410 printer can’t print-out on paper by USB cable with my new MacBook Air (M2 chip). But the scanning and copying features of the printer work. Printing with my 2016 MacBook Pro worked. After couple weeks with Apple and Epson technical support, I found myself repeating the same troubleshooting without result. I don’t like to give up but found a comment online with no explanation that Epson software doesn’t work with Rosetta 2. Consumer Reports wrote they stopped reviewing Epson printers due to feedback from their members. I liked this printer, but am looking for another brand that I can be sure works with new Apple processor chips. Any recommendations? Thanks. 1506

Apple-Silicon M1:
Apple says every well-behaved ordinary Application (that does not use Virtualization) will run on Apple-Silicon. It will use Rosetta emulation to translate the Intel binary to M1-binary.
Your Apps will run and not crash while being executed on a a completely different processor than the one the developer used. This is a truly remarkable feature.
It runs, and you can get your work done, which is what Apple promised and delivered.
For most applications, there is no need to wait for M1-specific code to be released. Rosetta-2 is very stable and works remarkably well.

Grant -
Thanks very much for your reply, it makes me feel a little more confident about buying the M1 MBP (of course, I'd feel even better about it if someone currently using a Mac with an M1 chip chimes in).
Thanks again,
Shelly
